🗳️ Kentucky Congressman Thomas Massie Loses Primary After 14 Years in Office

· 59 messages · May 20, 2026
What actually happened

Thomas Massie, a Republican congressman from Kentucky, lost his primary election on May 19 after holding his seat since 2012. His opponent, Ed Gallrein, a farmer and former Navy SEAL backed by President Trump, won by nine points. The race became the most expensive House primary in US history, with $32.6 million spent on ads. Massie had repeatedly voted against Trump's positions — including opposing the Iran war, voting against Trump's spending bill, and pushing to release the Epstein files. In his concession speech, Massie said: 'For 14 years those SOBs in Washington tried to buy my vote. They couldn't buy it.' Gallrein will now face Democrat Melissa Claire Strange in November.

WhisperStripe
Massie is gone. Kentucky primary. Lost by 9 points.
ChubbyOne
who
WhisperStripe
Congressman. Been there since 2012. Voted against Trump's spending bill, voted against the Iran war, pushed to release the Epstein files. Trump went after him hard and last night it worked.
NightShift
14 years in office. Won every previous election comfortably. In a normal year Massie himself said he'd have taken 80% of the vote.
SlyOne
32 million dollars spent on one House primary. I heard that near the rental this morning. Thought it was a Senate race.
TallNeck
Most expensive House primary in history according to AdImpact.
SpeedRun
32 million for ONE seat???
NightShift
15.8 million of that came from AIPAC and related pro-Israel groups alone. Massie voted against aid to Israel multiple times. He told CBS that the pro-Israel spending caused more disruption in the race than Trump did.
WhisperStripe
That's the part I keep thinking about. The guy who beat him is a farmer. Former Navy SEAL. Trump called him up and asked him to run. He didn't even debate Massie once.
TheKing
Refused to debate and still won by 9.
ChubbyOne
what did Massie actually do that was so bad
NightShift
Voted against the 'One Big Beautiful Bill' — Trump's main domestic spending package. Opposed the Iran war. Helped release the Epstein files even though Trump didn't want them out. Voted with Republicans 91% of the time but the other 9% was enough.
WhisperStripe
91% is not enough anymore apparently
GoldenSilence
It was never about the percentage. It was about which votes.
SnowPaw
His concession speech was something. 'For 14 years those SOBs in Washington tried to buy my vote. They couldn't buy it.'
SlyOne
strong exit line
ChubbyOne
I respect that actually
DeepThought
He said the race went on longer than Vietnam. That is a man who had already made peace with the result.
WhisperStripe
Trump's reaction when reporters asked him: 'He was a bad guy. He deserves to lose.'
SpeedRun
💀
TheKing
What does Gallrein actually stand for beyond supporting Trump
NightShift
His victory speech was: 'Now my focus is on advancing the president's and the party's agenda to put America first and Kentucky always.' That is the full policy platform as stated.
TallNeck
I remember when Massie said something months ago — that his race was a referendum on whether Congress should be independent or just do whatever the president wants. He was right about the question. Wrong about the answer voters would give.
WhisperStripe
He was right about the question. Wrong about the answer voters would give.
WhisperStripe
And now every other Republican in Congress watched this happen.
WhisperStripe
Massie's own supporters called it a chilling effect. The next person who thinks about crossing Trump on anything just saw what it costs.
GoldenSilence
Cassidy in Louisiana last week. Multiple Indiana state senators before that. Now Massie. The pattern is clear.
ChubbyOne
what happened to Cassidy
NightShift
Bill Cassidy. Republican Senator from Louisiana. Voted to convict Trump after the 2021 impeachment. Lost his primary last week. Came in third.
ChubbyOne
third
SlyOne
not second. third.
SnowPaw
The part that gets me is Defense Secretary Hegseth flew to Kentucky the day before the vote to campaign against Massie. A sitting cabinet secretary. Said he was there in a personal capacity.
TheKing
There is a federal law about cabinet officials doing that.
NightShift
There is. Defense Department said he was acting in his personal capacity. That is the legal cover.
WhisperStripe
Personal capacity while using a government title to make the appearance mean something
DeepThought
The name on the chest matters more than the capacity being claimed.
SlyOne
Lauren Boebert campaigned with Massie and Trump threatened to pull his endorsement of her. She still showed up.
SpeedRun
that took guts
TallNeck
Or she calculated that her own voters would reward it. Hard to know.
ChubbyOne
so what happens now. Gallrein just goes to Washington and votes yes on everything
GoldenSilence
Most likely. He was selected precisely for that.
WhisperStripe
He faces a Democrat in November. Melissa Claire Strange. But Kentucky's 4th went heavily Republican in 2024 so Gallrein is the heavy favorite.
NightShift
Massie himself won every general election since 2012 by large margins. The primary was always the only real race.
SnowPaw
So the seat was never really in danger. Just the person in it.
SlyOne
32 million dollars to swap one Republican for a different Republican
TheKing
That is exactly what it was.
ChubbyOne
I've been sitting here trying to figure out if I think Massie was right or wrong and I honestly can't decide
TallNeck
He voted against the Iran war. He pushed to release the Epstein files. Those aren't obviously wrong positions. He just picked the wrong party to hold them in right now.
WhisperStripe
Or the right positions at the wrong time
NightShift
He also said 'I have never voted for foreign aid to Egypt, to Syria, to Israel or to Ukraine.' That is a consistent position held over 14 years. Agree or not, it was never a surprise.
DeepThought
Consistency over 14 years and it still ended on one night.
GoldenSilence
🪶
SlyOne
Rand Paul endorsed him. Didn't help.
SpeedRun
does Rand Paul endorsing anyone ever help
SnowPaw
Fair point.
ChubbyOne
I keep coming back to the 32 million number. That's a lot of money to spend making sure one person can't vote a certain way anymore
WhisperStripe
That's exactly what it bought. Not a seat. A specific set of future votes.
TallNeck
And whoever comes after Gallrein will know what it costs to be the next Massie.
TheKing
That was probably the point from the beginning.
