Meta has announced it is terminating the rollout of default end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for Instagram direct messages, a reversal of a long-standing privacy pledge. The company cited surprisingly low user adoption of the opt-in 'secret conversations' feature as the primary driver for the decision. While WhatsApp and parent-app Facebook have moved toward universal E2EE, Instagram will maintain its current transport-layer security model, allowing Meta to retain access to message metadata and content for safety and advertising purposes. Privacy advocates have criticized the move, arguing that security should be a default standard rather than a popularity contest. Meta maintains that the decision balances user experience with the technical complexities of cross-app integration.
